One week until The Nippon Foundation-GEBCO Seabed 2030 Event: From Vision to Action

One week until The Nippon Foundation-GEBCO Seabed 2030 Event: From Vision to Action, to be held at the Royal Society, London, UK on October 22 2019.

On October 22 2019, the Nippon Foundation-GEBCO Seabed 2030 Project will host From Vision to Action, a special symposium at the Royal Society, London, UK. This prestigious event will mark the progress of The Seabed 2030 Project since its launch in 2017, and plot a course for mapping the entirety of the world’s ocean floor by the year 2030.

Earlier this year, Seabed 2030 announced that the data available to produce the definitive map of the world ocean floor had more than doubled, and more than 100 organisations are now engaged in the project and contributing data to the global grid. As we approach the UN Decade of Ocean Science for Sustainable Development (2021-2030), now is the time to take stock of where we are, how far we need to go, and how we will get there.

From Vision to Action will bring together ocean scientists, maritime experts, and representatives from international organisations and industry partners, to consider the challenges of seafloor mapping and the benefits to the world of a complete, high-resolution map. It will be an opportunity to share ideas, hear from the people leading mapping efforts around the globe, and learn about the collaborative networks underpinning Seabed 2030.

Presentations from Seabed 2030 scientists and high-level speakers including Mr Yohei Sasakawa, Chairman of The Nippon Foundation, Rear Admiral Shepard Smith of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), and Dr Mathias Jonas, Secretary General of the International Hydrographic Organization (IHO) will showcase the project’s achievements so far, explain how potential partners can engage with Seabed 2030 and contribute their data or resources, and demonstrate how new technological solutions are accelerating progress towards the goal of mapping the ocean floor.
