First Seabed 2030 - South and West Pacific Oceans Regional Mapping Meeting 2019
Members of the seafloor mapping communities for the South and West Pacific regions recently met at the Royal Port Nicholson Yacht Club in Wellington, New Zealand.
The meeting was arranged by the Seabed 2030 Regional Center for these areas with the aim to:
- Establish a Regional Mapping Committee consisting of representatives from relevant countries and organizations
- Identify new bathymetric data sources
- Discuss methods and protocols for data sharing and management
- Identify upcoming mapping expeditions
- Discuss all matters related to the efficient and smooth operation of the project
The meeting was attended by representatives from the academic/scientific community and from industry. Following a short formal Māori welcome, the first day consisted of presentations on the Seabed 2030 Project and a number of initiatives that could benefit from and to Seabed 2030. Day 2 saw presentations on a more technical level which focused on data portals and data sharing, Satellite Derived Bathymetry, and the GEBCO-NF Alumni's entry into the Shell Ocean Discovery XPRIZE Competition. Day 3 consisted of short break-out sessions to discuss the role of the Regional Mapping Committee, the data sharing agreement and the value propositions for the stakeholder.

"The workshop was a real success with ca. 65 registrations from 13 different countries, and 43 people attending the workshop in Wellington (plus two remotely). I genuinely appreciate everyone's effort in travelling (or attempting to travel) to New Zealand!"

Seabed 2030 is a collaborative project between the Nippon Foundation and the General Bathymetric Chart of the Oceans (GEBCO). It aims to bring together all available bathymetric data to produce the definitive map of the world ocean floor by 2030 and make it available to all.
